At TFP, we believe that it is crucial to educate the public about the environmental benefits of using forest products.
SO LET'S ASK OURSELVES A QUESTION:
IF NOT WOOD, THEN WHAT?
Naturally durable wood is carbon sequestering and 100% biodegradable and can be repurposed, up-cycled, and recycled before reaching the end of its useful service life. The alternatives end their service life in a landfill for an indeterminate amount of time, typically releasing some type of toxin or heavy metal.
Wood products are created by solar energy, soil, and water, collecting carbon throughout the growth process and storing it until the day it biodegrades naturally back to the earth becoming soil itself.
Most building materials off-gas volatile organic compounds into the air we breathe, but not naturally durable wood products. This makes wood more environmentally benign than virtually any other building material other than stone.
Naturally durable wood products are safe for human and animal contact not requiring any chemical coatings, adhesives, epoxies, resins, or preservatives for service.
Wood is very low maintenance. Unless you want to preserve the natural color with natural oil-based coatings, simply allow the wood to weather naturally to gray and wash it with biodegradable deck cleaners when necessary to remove mold or mildew.
Forests regenerate naturally and sustainably when properly managed. If we do not afford value to forest products, what will become of them? They will come under pressure for conversion to non-forest use like ranching, farming, and infrastructure. Substitution of non-forest-based products is the very worst thing for forest preservation.
